How to take a screenshot on Mac

On Mac computers from Apple, you can take a screenshot of the entire screen, or a screenshot of a selected area of the screen or the window of the desired application.

1. To take a screenshot of the entire screen, simultaneously hold down the keys ⇧ Shift + ⌘ (Cmd, Command) + 3 and hold them.

2. If a thumbnail image appears in the lower right corner, you can edit the resulting screenshot by clicking on the thumbnail. Or wait for the screenshot to appear on your desktop.

1. To take a screenshot of the area, simultaneously press the keys ⇧ Shift + ⌘ (Cmd, Command) + 4.

2. Select the required area of the screen with the cross-shaped cursor (by holding down the click). To move the selection, press and hold the spacebar while dragging. You can cancel the creation of a screenshot using the key Esc (Escape).

3. Release the click, this will take a screenshot of the selected area.

4. If a thumbnail image appears in the lower right corner, you can edit the resulting screenshot by clicking on the thumbnail. Or wait for the screenshot to appear on your desktop.

How to take a screenshot of a window or menu

1. Go to the required window or menu you want to take a screenshot of.

2. Press and hold the keys at the same time ⇧ Shift + ⌘ (Cmd, Command) + 4 + Space. The cursor should change to the camera. To cancel creating a screenshot, click on Esc (Escape).

3. Click on the desired window or menu to take a snapshot. To avoid the window shadow in the snapshot, hold down the Option key while clicking.

4. If a thumbnail image appears in the lower right corner of the screen, you can edit the resulting image by clicking on the thumbnail. Or wait for the screenshot to appear on your desktop.

Where to find the captured screenshot

With standard settings, screenshots are saved on the desktop with the name «Screenshot [date] ([time]).png».

On Mojave or later versions of Mac OS, you can change the default location of captured screenshots in the Options menu in Screenshot. You can move the screenshot thumbnail to a folder or document.
